Road repairs and operational preparations are progressing well, and all planning remains firmly in place for reopening Rhino Post Safari Lodge on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, as previously communicated. By this time the road should be suitable for non 4×4 vehicles. Final assessments will continue, but conditions are improving steadily. Plans are also still on track to reopen Plains Camp
Persistent rainfall began in early January across the Kruger National Park, with particularly heavy rainfall recorded in the northern regions. Rainfall has been highly variable throughout the park, and full assessments of infrastructure damage are still underway.

Few people are aware that one many of issues that water scientists and mangers in the Kruger National Park (KNP) worry about is disposable nappies. As we arrive at Rhino Post, a large bull elephant greets us in the parking lot. Bushbuck and impala cut grass in long swaths along either side of the raised walkway leading to our private bungalow along the dry riverbed. Before we’ve even opened our bags, a large, male kudu grazes along our back porch.
Visitors to safari lodges built along river-banks or in other areas with dense undergrowth will sometimes be surprised to see a medium-sized antelope quietly staring at them from only a few meters away. Once certain the human poses no threat, the animal, often a bushbuck, will resume nibbling at shoots and leaves, ears twitching to chase away irritating flies.
The Greater frigatebird, a hunter of the open ocean, sometimes spends months on the wing, riding the winds and fishing far offshore. The Alpine swift has been recorded spending 200 days in the air, only returning to the ground to breed, and migrating birds often fly non-stop for days while crossing oceans and deserts.
On a pleasant sunny day in late July, Chundu Island guide Johannes Mankuli was taking guests for a boat ride on the broad Zambezi River on Zimbabwe’s northern border when he noticed a herd of elephants gathering in the riverine vegetation along the riverbanks.
“Some days if there are not a lot of animals around, I talk to the guests about the birds, the trees, or animal tracks. If you know how to look there is always something happening in the bush,” Johannes says, adding that when he goes home to the village where he grew up, he explains to children and others what his work entails and why wildlife conservation and tourism are important.

Elephants produce low frequency “rumbles”, some of which are at frequencies humans are unable to hear, by forcing air from the lungs over their vocal cords creating the "rumble”. Some are intended for long range communication and others might be used by a mother to interact with her calf.
As you walk in Kruger, you start to appreciate the small moments and the details that can only be appreciated when you slow down, and walk on foot in the bush, as Bushmen have for thousands of years. You begin to adapt to its rhythm, the birdsong, the rise of the sun, and the majesty of the animals. This closeness to nature is incredibly exciting and endlessly special.
My husband and I board the game vehicle excitedly, ready for an afternoon drive from Rhino Post and all the unexpected moments it might bring. Our guide, James, asks us if we’d like to stay on the busy, main road or take a chance down a quieter dirt road along the riverbed. There haven’t been any sightings there yet today, he explains, meaning we could be on a sighting alone if we’re lucky. The are about 790 species of dung beetles found in Africa, ranging in size from a few millimetres in length to blockbusters measuring 45 mm or more. Their breeding and feeding habits vary but the most famous are those that shape the dung into balls and roll it away to be buried and used as nesting sites.
Seen a Fat mouse recently? No, not a rather small, rotund rodent but specifically a Fat mouse, which is the common name for Steatomys pratensis. This mouse, which occurs northern South Africa, Zimbabwe and many other parts of Africa is closely related to the Tiny fat mouse, Steatomys parvus which is also a really small rotund rodent. Then there is of course Kreb’s fat mouse Steatomys krebsii.
Genets are common nocturnal visitors to campsites and lodges in the African bush, moving silently through even dense vegetation as they hunt for insects, rodents, and other prey attracted by lights and food scraps.
Carmine bee-eaters are bold creatures in both temperament and colour and are not averse to perching on the backs of much larger animals like buffalo or Kori bustards, the world’s largest flying bird.
One of the most interesting aspects of the mopane tree is that they are the host of the mopane “worm” (the larvae of the Mopane emperor moth) which feed on the trees in in huge numbers in summer and are harvested by local people as food.
The dwarf mongoose, it is Africa’s smallest carnivore and weighs 350-400 grammes and reaches about 250 mm in length, is a highly social, diurnal animal which lives in packs of up to 19 animals, although the average is nine or 10.
